Recent weeks have seen a major shift in the betting for this one, with a favourite emerging in the field. Qabala comes into this one as the standout contender to win the 1000 Guineas, having been cut down to 11/4 with bet365 to seal a victory. A strong run in the Nell Gwyn Stakes last month saw her price slashed going into this race, but will she live up to that tag at Newmarket on Sunday?
There’s a limited sample size to Qabala, with that April victory her only run in 2019. We don’t think her price is tempting enough to side with the favourite, especially given that there are some alternatives in the field. The main contender to Qabala ahead of Sunday’s race in second-favourite Skitter Scatter, a runner which a much stronger record ahead of this big race.
While Skitter Scatter is coming off the back of a 252 day break, she had an impressive run through 2018. The early months of last year saw her pick up four top three finishes including a victory in Dundalk. That form did step up in the later part of the year, with her final three races in 2018 bringing three straight victories. That means she heads into Sunday’s race with four wins in six, which is perfect form to take on Qabala. When you consider that Skitter Scatter is priced up at a decent 6/1 with bet365, that certainly looks like better value. We are getting the US-born horse onside here, given that her form and price both far outstrip the current favourite for the 1000 Guineas.
While there aren’t too many longer odds options on this race, we do have another contender who could make a real push for glory this weekend. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this race in two of the last thee years, while he’s likely to have some strong contenders in the mix here. That includes Fairyhouse, an 8/1 option with Betfred going into this one. She has claimed four wins in five races, with her only other race seeing a third-place finish at Ascot. After a victory at Newmarket in September, we think there’s great value to be found on Fairyhouse, so we’re also going with O’Brien’s strongest option in the field.
