Croatia v England Preview, Stats and Betting Tips, Friday 12th October, Stadion HNK Rijeka, Kick off: 19:45

England’s run to the semi finals of the World Cup reinvigorated the support for the Three Lions, turning a jaded and cynical public into fanatics once again. You’d think that support would be even higher amongst fans of the nation who beat England in the Luzhniki Stadium but Croatian football has a frustrating habit of causing problems for itself. The question is, can England take advantage of Croatia’s current issues by securing their first win of the UEFA Nations League?

Croatia v England Betting Tips

  • Draw at 19/10 with Betfair
  • 1-1 Correct Score at 5/1 with BetVictor

Croatia v England Preview

It may not have been apparent by watching Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and company in Russia over the summer but there are big problems in Croatian football. Relations between the fans and the Croatian Football Federation have been strained for years and Friday’s match at Stadion HNK Rijeka will be played behind closed doors as punishment for a swastika being branded on the pitch ahead of a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy.

The job for England manager, Gareth Southgate, and his opposite number, Zlatko Dalic, is to ensure that their players keep the intensity up. As well as the lack of fans, Stadion HNK Reijka is a training facility so both managers will be worried about the application of their players as this is an important match in the context of the Nations League.

With two wins Spain in their opening two matches, Spain are in pole position to top Group A4 and challenge for the maiden Nations League title. That leaves England and Croatia in a battle to avoid relegation and puts a lot of pressure on Friday night.

Croatia will be feeling that pressure most having been humiliated 6-0 by Spain last time out. That was their biggest ever defeat so Dalic will be rightly worried about the malaise being allowed to fester. England, by contrast, were robbed of a draw against Spain by a very tough decision to rule out a late Danny Welbeck goal although Southgate was concerned enough with the performance to make a number of changes to the England squad.

Stats, Injuries and Suspensions

England edge the head to head record with Croatia. The Three Lions have won four and lost three of their previous eight meetings but Croatia were much the better team in the 2018 World Cup semi final.

Southgate has made significant alterations for his most recent squad. James Maddison, Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho are all stepping up having represented England at various youth team levels while Ross Barkley, Nathaniel Chalobah and Harry Winks all come back into the fold. The injury to James Tarkowski has also seen Lewis Dunk called up for the first time.

Croatia v England Conclusion

There is a general feeling that the form from the World Cup needs to be taken with a pinch of salt given the number of well fancied teams who underperformed so badly in Russia. Croatia and England’s defeats to Spain fuel that idea which leaves both teams needing a big performance on Friday night. The context of the group also means a win would be most welcome but the subdued atmosphere and modest surroundings could result in a low key game.

From a betting perspective, that makes the draw look good value at 19/10 with Betfair while BetVictor’s odds of 5/1 on the 1-1 correct score are more than fair.
