Arsenal v FC Basel Betting Tips

Basel manager Urs Fischer will be hoping that both Marc Janko and Luca Ziffi are fully fit ahead of this important match but they do have decent alternatives if not, as they demonstrated in their 2-1 away win over Lausanne Sport on Wednesday. They missed out on the group stages last season after losing their final qualifying tie with Maccabi Tel Aviv on away goals but they are far from strangers to the Champions League, having been at this stage seven times before so the occasion shouldn’t be overwhelming for the Swiss side.

Arsenal have won all their four previous matches against sides from Switzerland but this is their first time facing Basel. Although they qualified yet again to the knockout stages last season, early defeats against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos made it very hard work for them. They’ll be looking for a more comfortable group stage experience this time and with their squad having been strengthen in the summer, this is a more than realistic aim, but things could be tricky against a Swiss side who are not in a habit of losing games this season.

Betting Verdict

It’s important to bear in mind for this match that Basel seem to absolutely relish playing football in England. In the past five years they have secured draws against Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool as well as beating Chelsea. The Swiss outfit also have the added bonus of coming into this match under some excellent domestic form which has given them a generous lead at the top of the Super League table, even at this early stage. With Arsenal having played a big match against Chelsea four days before this tie, Wenger may rotate his side a little and this might just be enough to let Basel grab a point.

FC Basel have been scoring for fun in the Swiss league but even against much tougher opposition, they should be able to grab themselves a goal. The pace of Seydou Doumbia will be a threat and they also have plenty of midfielders who are happy to chip in with goals, including Birkir Bjarnason who netted twice during the Euros. Of course, Arsenal too will bring plenty of fire power with them into this game even if Wenger chooses to rest a few big names. The last time the Gunners failed to score at home was against Barcelona in February so rest assured they will find the back of the net on Wednesday.
