Will Arsenal beat Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup on Tuesday 27th October 2015?
Sheffield Wednesday are currently sitting in ninth place in the Championship with 20 points from their 13 games this term. That’s not a bad return in the notoriously tough second tier of English football and Arsene Wenger would do well to take the challenge the South Yorkshire side pose seriously. An on eight-game unbeaten run – including their 1-0 victory at Newcastle in the last round of the League Cup – Wednesday will have no fear against the Gunners, especially if Wenger chooses to play a second string.
On the other hand, history favours the north London side who have beaten Wednesday every time they have faced them in this competition, including in the final itself in 1993 (the season in which Arsenal also beat Wednesday in the FA Cup final, albeit after a replay). With no meetings between the sides since 2000 (two draw in the Premier League) there is little to really go on in the head to head record, but the reality is that Arsenal have a far, far better stronger crop of players than that which Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal can call upon.
Even if – as expected – Wenger does rest the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, injuries to Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and others mean that the Arsenal boss doesn’t have much choice than to throw in the likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla. Walcott, in particular, would relish the chance to lead the line against lower league opposition as he attempts to hone his striker’s instinct and force himself into Wenger’s thinking as the number one frontman.
In short, despite Wednesday being likely to put up a good fight, Arsenal are flying at the moment and we fully expect them to cruise to a comfortable victory in this one, making the enhanced odds of 4/1 on an Arsenal win look far too good to turn down.
