Man City v Tottenham Tips and Betting Offers, Saturday 17th August 2019, Kick off: 17.30

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City got off to a blistering start to the defence of their Premier League crown on the opening weekend. They travelled to West Ham and hammered the Hammers 5-0. Raheem Sterling fired in an impressive hat-trick, and Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus were also on target.

For Spurs, things were not quite so straightforward. They hosted newly promoted Aston Villa and found themselves unexpectedly behind at half time. Villa got off to an early lead, John McGinn scoring in the ninth minute, and they held their advantage until well into the second half. Unfortunately for Villa, Spurs equalised through record signing Tanguy Ndombele in the 73rd minute. The ever dependable Harry Kane then scored twice to seal the win and break Villa hearts.

On to this match, frankly, there is only going to be one winner here: Man City.

Betting Tips

Odds correct at the time of writing and are subject to change.

  • Man City to be winning at half time and full time – at 21/20 with Coral
  • Sterling to score first – at 4/1 with Betfair

City Superiority to Seal Victory

Manchester City have top quality players all over the pitch, and while Spurs are no slouches, it should be remembered they ended last season a full 27 points adrift of champions City. That is a very significant gulf, and one which we think Mauricio Pochettino will be unable to overcome at the Etihad on Saturday.

City were tested against Liverpool in the Community Shield recently, but Liverpool are a rung above Spurs on the footballing ladder at present. Given how badly Spurs struggled, on home soil no less, against a newly promoted side last weekend, we think it could turn out to be a rather comfortable afternoon for the Citizens, especially if they get an early goal. As such we’re backing the home side to be winning at half time and the final whistle.

Sterling on Fire

Raheem Sterling has matured as a player in the last 12 months and he has added a clinical edge to his finishing that was sometime absent in the past. This will of course be to City benefit as the season progresses, and the detriment of any side he faces. We’re backing Sterling at nice odds of 4/1 to net the first goal of the game.
