Preview
It certainly seems like Celtic are miles off the pace. They’re 19/2 outsiders with BetVictor to win here, while the draw is 19/4. City have been installed as 3/10 favourites with Sky Bet, there’s clearly little value in simply backing an away win here. The Champions League has seen a few mismatches so far, and we can see this being another.
If you look at the cost of each team, it’s very clear that there’s a big gap in quality. Celtic’s squad cost a total of £16million. That’s less than 10% of Man City’s summer transfer outlay. The Premier League side have a starting 11 which costs over £300 million, while they have big money signings who can’t even get in the side right now. Celtic’s £4million signing of Scott Sinclair was their biggest of the summer, he came from Championship side Aston Villa.
Right now the Scottish side are barely competing with Championship clubs financially. That slightly takes the shine off this huge game between two British sides. It’s easy to see this being another long night for Celtic.
Betting Verdict
However, that doesn’t mean that there’s no value to be found here. A City win is obviously what most people fancy, but there are a few alternatives. City have ripped through plenty of defences this term, they hit four past Borussia Monchengladbach in their last European game. Given that Celtic shipped seven to Barcelona, you’d expect City to score quite a few here. Sergio Aguero is starting here having hit two hat-tricks in this competition already. City’s attack should easily blow Celtic apart, so we’re backing over 2.5 goals for the visitors, which is priced at 21/20 with Coral.
Celtic do have strong home support behind them, and that should will them on to push forward. Man City aren’t the most defensively solid, which should let Celtic in here. While they don’t have an expensive strike force, they do have pace which can hit City on the break. We’re backing the Scottish champions to grab a goal in a defeat here. An away win and both teams to score is our second tip, which is priced at 9/5 with Betfair.
