Preview
Chelsea’s 3-0 loss against Roma on Tuesday night felt like the culmination of their horrible start to the season. The Blues’ defence was laughable at times, they were lightweight going forwards and they were outfought in midfield. The players rightly came in for some stick for their performance at the Stadio Olimpico but it was Conte who bore the brunt of the criticism. His strange team choice and the distinct lack of a plan saw some Chelsea claim the manager should be sacked just months after he won the Premier League title in his first season in charge.
Although there are no Man Utd fans calling for Mourinho’s head, it’s fair to say that this season has not gone completely to plan for the Portuguese. There is a clash between the sort of football that Mourinho wants his team to play (at least for the short term) and the style that United fans have become accustomed to over the past couple of decades.
Everybody at Man Utd – Mourinho included – would love the team to play swashbuckling football, taking the game to the opposition at every opportunity. You just get the feeling that Mourinho lacks belief that his team can compete with the best teams playing that sort of football.
Betting Verdict
It may not be popular but you can expect Man Utd to take to the Stamford Bridge pitch content to stop their opponents from creating chances. Given Chelsea’s recent problems, it would be no surprise to see Conte adopt a similar approach.
With three defeats in the league already, it’s clear at this early stage that Chelsea’s chances of defending their Premier League title are slim at best. That led many to believe that Conte would prioritise the Champions League which made his team selection in Rome all the more surprising. Could it be that his personal rivalry with Mourinho took precedence?
The two managers famously fell out during their league meeting at Stamford Bridge last season and they’ve taken pops at one another during recent press conferences. The desire not to lose to one another will manifest itself onto the players on the pitch on Sunday which makes the 11/5 that BetVictor are quoting on the draw look well worth taking.
The sight of three Chelsea defenders going after one player during a Roma attack on Tuesday was difficult for their fans to watch. There were issues with motivation and personnel but the biggest concern was a pacey attack by the opposition. Mourinho will have watched the Chelsea defending with relish and will surely give Marcus Rashford a chance on Sunday. His pace on the ball and quality finishing make Rashford a good bet to score at 13/5 with Coral.
