The Parisian side need to win this tie in order to keep their season going as despite it only being March, they have a near unassailable lead at the top of Ligue 1. At the time of writing, Monaco occupy second place and they are 23 points behind PSG with ten matches left to play so it looks for all the world as if they are going to win yet another league title.
However, if the project at PSG is going to work then they need to secure some tangible success in Europe as players would surely rather test themselves in the more competitive league of England, Spain or Germany. Winning the French league year upon year isn’t than impressive a feat when you consider the quality of the sides throughout the rest of the division. Indeed, of the 24 sides still left in European competition, PSG are the only French side left in the competition, meaning that even Belgium have greater representation.
However, PSG will be confident that they can make it through to the quarter finals having edged past Chelsea last year at this stage of the competition. It was a tie that Chelsea should never have lost and they will be out for revenge this year. They have been going well under Guus Hiddink and they have started to look like the Chelsea of old, with some impressive performances. They have also saved some of their best football for Europe this season and ahead of this game, it is easy to see why both sides would be confident.
The bookies are making Chelsea marginal favourites to win this one and we think that they have enough about tem to see PSG off. In three visits to Stamford Bridge, the French outfit have never walked away with victory, although a draw or even a defeat (if they score at least twice and only lose by one) would see them through to the next stage of the competition. As is often the case with the Champions League, away goals can be crucial and we can’t see the home side keeping a clean sheet in this one, with both teams to score an attractive option at Stamford Bridge.
