Most Popular Football Bets

Football is one of the most popular sports to bet on, with a great deal of markets available pre-match and in play. Whether you are backing a team to win, the first goalscorer or everything in between, all the big bookmakers will have you covered. Let’s check out the most popular football bets.

Most Popular Football Bets

  • Winner in 90 minutes – Also called match odds or 1X2 betting, this is simply betting on which side will win a given match, or whether it will end in a draw.
  • Both teams to score – As the name suggests, this is betting on whether both teams will score in a given game. You can usually bet against both teams scoring which will payout if just one team or neither teams scores in the game.
  • Correct score – Betting on the final score of a given football match.
  • Half-time/full time – This is betting on the match result at both half time and full time. You can back either side to be winning at half time, or the match to be level, and the same at the full time whistle. There are nine possible combinations: Team A/Team A; Team A/Team B; Team B/Team A; Team B/Team B; Draw/Draw; Draw/Team A; Draw/Team B; Team A/Draw; Team B/Draw.
  • Draw no bet – This is a bet that effectively excludes the draw as an option. You back one side or the other and if the match ends all-square you get your stake back.
  • Total goals under/over – This is betting on there being over or under a certain number of goals scored in a given match. This includes goals scored by either side, and the bets are often placed on over or under 2.5 goals or others with 0.5 goal parameters so that it is obvious if you have won or lost your bet.
  • Handicap – This bet gives a side a number of goals head start or handicap, so you might back Man United +1 which means that your bet would come in even if they drew the match. If you backed Man United -3, they would have to win by four clear goals for your bet to pay out.

Match Odds Betting

Backing the winner of a game in 90 minutes is arguably the most common bet you can have on the football. The odds obviously depend on the calibre of teams participating, but you can get great value if you shop around. Also, backing both teams to score is another popular choice of bet for the punters.

Football Betting Odds

With so much to bet on these days, you will never find yourself struggling for choice. As we mentioned, backing the winning team in the 90 is probably the most popular bet, but you can bet on the correct score, the half-time/full-time result and much, much more.

Having a punt on the correct score is often a popular choice among punters. If you fancy a team to win, predicting them to win by a certain scoreline is a sure-fire way of enhancing your odds. For example, putting a few quid on Chelsea to beat Bournemouth at evens is great, but why not back the Blues to beat the Cherries 2-1 at odds of 7/1? You can pretty much back any score in any game that you fancy.

Manchester City to beat Burnley seems a formality these days. Because of that, backing City just to win is not really worth it. However, putting some money on the Citizens to be winning at half time and full time is a completely different story. Last season, Pep Guardiola’s men, who went on to retain their Premier League crown, were leading at the break in 25 of their 38 matches. Therefore, it’s always worth having a look at the odds for the big sides to be leading at half time and full time instead of just backing them to win in normal time.

Draw no bet is also used a lot by punters. If you back a team in the draw no bet market, your bet will come in if your side prevails, but your stake will be refunded if it ends all square. Of course, if the team you back lose, you will lose your money. So, if the worst happens and your team concede an equaliser right at the death, at least you get your money back. This is certainly a market worth taking a look at.

Predicting the amount of goals in a match is also an exciting way to have a bet on the footy. Backing the exact goals can be difficult, which is why many punters opt for the under/over goals market, with the odds going up the more goals you predict. For example, over 0.5 goals may be a mere 1/20, but over 4.5 could get you a nice 8/1 or more. You can also back a team to win and over/under a certain amount of goals. Just like the half-time/full-time market, this is a great way to boost your odds when backing your preferred team to win.

Last but not least, handicap betting is also very popular choice when it comes to football betting. When Man City faced Newport County in the Emirates FA Cup last season, putting your money on City to win was not worth it. However, backing Pep’s side to win -2 was the way to go. When one of the top sides in the division take on one of the weaker ones, handicap betting is definitely worth checking out. Rather than backing Barcelona to beat Celta Vigo, put a few quid on Barca to win -1, -2 or -3, which would seriously boost your odds.

There are hundreds of different things to bet on when it comes to football. We have just scratched the surface here, as you can bet on the winning margin, a team to win to nil, the number of corners, stoppage time, number of cards and so on. We are spoilt for choice, but always remember to shop around before laying your money down!
