French Open Betting Tips
Men – Andy Murray, odds of 5/1 with Ladbrokes
The only clay court Grand Slam, the French Open is a great event and Paris’ iconic red surface makes for a fascinating test of a players’ skills. In the men’s game Rafa Nadal has been utterly dominant, winning the French Open nine times between 2005 and 2014. He may not be the player he was but he is the second favourite for the 2016 championship, priced at best odds of 4/1 with Ladbrokes.
Novak Djokovic is the favourite but at short odds of just 5/6 with Coral (Bet £5, £20 free bet) we prefer to look elsewhere. And that means to second seed and third favourite Andy Murray at generous odds of 5/1 with Ladbrokes. The Scott swept Djokovic aside in straight sets in Rome to claim his second major clay court title and seems to be thriving without a coach and as a father.
His serve looks far stronger than it ever has and his clay court game is now right up there with the best. He’s beaten both Nadal and Djokovic on clay in the past month or so and we think he can do so again here to land his first ever French Open title.
Women – Garbine Muguruza, odds of 12/1 with Betfair
Serena Williams is the favourite and she can be backed at odds of 9/4 with BetVictor to defend her crown. Over the last four years she has two French Open titles to her name but also defeats in the first and second rounds and this inconsistency, plus her age, means 9/4 is too short for us. Serena isn’t fully at home on clay and the surface in Paris means her power isn’t such a decisive factor and so our betting tip comes at much longer odds.
Spanish 22 year old Garbine Muguruza had a breakthrough season in 2015 and she can improve again this year. Last year she made the final of Wimbledon and also made the quarters here at Roland Garros (for the second year running). 2016 hasn’t been quite as good, although she made the third round at the Australian Open, but we think odds of 12/1 with Betfair are great value on her favourite surface. The world number three is very consistent, made the semis on clay at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and is sure to give you a great run for your money at chunky odds.
