Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Tips, Odds, Free Bets and Betting Offers, Thursday 19th May 2016

The Irish Open is going through something of a resurgence. It has been a European Tour tournament since the mid 1970s but the event has gone up and down in terms of prestige in that time. It has certainly flourished since the Rory Foundation took over the hosting duties and Dubai Duty Free were brought in as title sponsors. Rory McIlroy has been able to convince some of the leading lights of European golf over to County Clare for this week but many will have been drawn by the chance to play at the K Club.

  • Graeme McDowell to win at 33/1 with Ladbrokes
  • Lee Westwood each way at 35/1 with BetVictor

The K Club was the venue for one of the greatest weeks in European golf history when Europe won the 2006 Ryder Cup there by a record margin. Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington all have great memories of that week and they are in the field for this week’s tournament to try and get that winning feeling back on the Palmer Ryder Cup course.

The par 72 track was designed by Arnold Palmer and is a great example of parkland golf. There is water in play on the majority of the holes and trees are waiting to obstruct any stray tee shots around the 7,350 yard test. It’s a fairly long test but previous tournaments here – which include the European Open as well as the Ryder Cup – suggest that it cannot be easily overpowered. Instead it is important to plot a route around.

For tournament host Rory McIroy, a win would be the icing on the cake of a week that he relishes. However, his game has still not quite peaked and given his many duties this week he can be left to one side at 4/1 with Coral. Rory leads the charge of a number of highly talented players in their 20s but there are two more experienced players worthy of backing this week.

Each Way Options at the Irish Open

The first of these is Graeme McDowell. GMac would be one of the most popular winners of his national open especially as he’s never really contended in the tournament. There were fears for his longevity in the game but having picked up a win at the OHL Classic early on in the PGA Tour season his hard work has started to pay off. A top 10 finish at the Players Championship last week is not to be sniffed at and he could be about to land a hugely emotional win at 33/1 with Ladbrokes.

Lee Westwood has also been seeing the fruits of his labour lately. One of European golf’s most successful players, Westwood finished joint second in the Masters in his last outing. He may not have played competitively in well over a month but he is vastly experienced and has been playing golf during his break. At 35/1 with BetVictor, Westwood looks a good bet to battle away against the conditions and push the leaders hard at least.
