After meeting each other in the League Cup final on Sunday (which City won on penalties), these two sides resume hostilities on Wednesday as Manchester City make the short trip to Anfield to face Jürgen Klopp’s side. City will be looking to build on their Wembley triumph and to avenge their 4-1 beating by Liverpool at the Etihad in what is probably the best performance put in by the Reds during Jürgen Klopp’s time at the club. They will also need a win if they are to keep their title challenge alive and if they drop any more points then they will be in a battle to keep hold of fourth spot, with Manchester United, West Ham and Southampton all chasing them down.

Manchester City were absolutely battered during that 4-1 defeat and the scoreline could have certainly been more damming if Liverpool had managed to put away all of their chances. Liverpool will also be able to call up Daniel Sturridge who missed that game through injury and he will be looking to put in a big performance against his former side and he will also need to keep scoring if he is going to make a late break into the England squad. The Birmingham born forward has a lot to do if he is to force his way on to the plane with himself, Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and arguably Jermain Defoe all looking to go to France.

City themselves have a top class striker in the form of Sergio Aguero and whilst it is probably a bit too simplistic to boil this clash down to a battle between these two strikers, you get the impression that the striker that puts in the better performance will find themselves on the winning side. As we said earlier, it is a win that City could desperately do with having dropped points in a recent clash against Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur which saw them fall six points behind the leaders. With City in League Cup action at the weekend, they have slipped further behind the leading pack and they need the three points.

We do think that they will be able to get the win however and the odds of 7/4 on a City win aren’t bad at all. Liverpool look better on the road than they do at Anfield and we think that they will struggle to deal with their mounting fixture list as fatigue sets in to what is quite a small squad. The Reds look light at the back and they may well end up conceding a few goals, however, you’d back them to find a goal in front of their own fans.
