Man Utd v Valencia Preview
The Man Utd board appointed Jose Mourinho to repair the damage done in the years following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Winning the Europa League and taking the club back into the Champions League were both very positive steps but the next ones are even tougher. Mourinho now has to mount a challenge both on the Premier League title and the Champions League.
The former challenge already looks beyond Man Utd this season but the latter began very well with that 3-0 win in Switzerland. Valencia do represent a step up in class but the Spanish side have played worse this season than Mourinho’s men. Their first six matches in La Liga yielded just the one point as the pressure seriously builds on Marcelino.
That pressure intensified after Valencia were beaten 2-0 by Juventus in their Group H opener despite the Italians being reduced to 10 men in the first half. They were outplayed for much of that match and, like so often this season, looked toothless in front of goal. It’s going to take a big improvement for Valencia to avoid defeat in Manchester.
Relevant Stats, Injuries and Suspensions
Victory at Old Trafford would be just the thing to kickstart Valencia’s season but Marcelino would surely settle for a draw. That’s been the outcome in five of their eight previous meetings including four of the last five. Man Utd won two of the other three with Valencia’s only win coming in the UEFA Cup in 1982.
Although United are the worthy favourites, they’ve won just two of their last 13 matches against Spanish clubs but their more recent form is more encouraging with just three defeats in their last 21 matches in UEFA competitions.
Marcos Rojo is one of the very few injury concerns for the home side while Valencia could travel with a full squad.
Man Utd v Valencia Tips
The bookies all make Man Utd the favourites for Tuesday night’s match but are they playing well enough at the moment to back at odds on? If you back this United side to win you’d want a decent potential prize which is why betting on the home side to win to nil against this goal shy Valencia side looks to be the play at 17/10 with Coral.
Marcelino would love his team to find something and turn on the style at Old Trafford but he knows their best chance of leaving with a positive result is by keeping things tight. That will be just fine by Mourinho so it could well pay to back under 2.5 goals at 21/20 with BetVictor.
