Preview

Man Utd’s first match in the Champions League offered the under fire Mourinho some reprieve. A Paul Pogba inspired performance saw United waltz past Young Boys 3-0 in Switzerland but they were unable to follow that up against Valencia. The Old Trafford faithful grew increasingly frustrated at the lack of attacking intent shown by their team against Valencia and they know that it will take a lot of improvement for them to avoid defeat against the Old Lady.

Juventus are now major contenders in the Champions League. Although they haven’t won Europe’s major tournament since 1996, Juventus made the final in 2015 and 2017. Max Allegri has a supremely talented squad at his disposal but his chances of getting his hand on the Champions League trophy were improved by the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese star, who will receive a warm welcome on his return to Old Trafford, has found his feet at Juventus but is just part of a potent forward line. Mourinho will need to use all of his defensive organisation and tactical nous to stop Juventus from scoring while the home side will also face a challenge breaking creating chances against the Italians’ world class defence.

Analysis

Man Utd and Juventus developed something of a rivalry around the turn of the century when they faced each other in a number of high stakes matches. United won both legs when they were last paired up by the Champions League draw but that was 15 years ago so the rivalry has cooled somewhat.

Mourinho has found it impossible to settle on a starting line up this season. Fitness and form concerns will inevitably see him make changes from the team that started at Stamford Bridge. He’ll definitely be without Marcos Rojo while there are doubts about Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay.

Juventus, who have won every game in the Champions League and Serie A so far, will have to do without Douglas Costa but Cristiano Ronaldo is able to play after he saw his thee match European suspension reduced to just one.
