Mares’ Hurdle Tips, Cheltenham Festival Day One, Tuesday 10th March 2020
As mentioned, Benie Des Dieux is the favourite for the 2020 Mares’ Hurdle, priced at odds of around 4/6 at the time of writing. Honeysuckle, meanwhile, is the 5/2 second favourite, and though it will certainly be a challenge to get the better of the favourite, she certainly has a fair chance.
In last year’s race, Benie Des Dieux should have won and was three lengths clear in the closing stages, only to fall at the final hurdle, much to the astonishment of the watching public. While it is perhaps unlikely such an occurrence would happen again, it is not beyond the realms of possibility.
More importantly, however, is that Honeysuckle has remained unbeaten thus far in her career despite coming up against some very tidy opposition. In the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown in February she got the better of such luminaries as Supasundae, Petit Mouchoir and Sharjah, and in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle she was far too good for the likes of Apple’s Jade and others.
This is sizing up towards being one of the races of the opening day and it really could go either way between Honeysuckle and Benie Des Dieux. If in doubt though, why not back both of them with the respective 40/1 offers, and one of them is pretty likely to bring home the bacon.
