Sevilla v Man Utd Preview

Sevilla certainly haven’t been performing above expectations in the La Liga this season. They are very much among the fight to secure a spot in next season’s Europa League but a second consecutive top-four finish looks beyond them. The main difference this year is that Los Nervionenses are scoring goals at a considerably slower rate. After 23 La Liga matches, not a single player had amassed more than five league goals which is a rather concerning stat for boss Vicenzo Montella. What will also be a worry for him is that United have the best defensive record in the Premier League, letting in an average of 0.7 goals a game.

What Sevilla do have going for them though is an unbelievably strong home record. They’ve lost just one game at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium since November 2016 so it’s fair to say their home is a fortress. One of the teams closest to securing a very rare victory at Sevilla’s ground in recent months was Liverpool during their penultimate Champions League group stage game. The Spaniards found themselves three goals down at the break but rallied in wonderful style to rescue a draw. Looking at more current form, the Spanish side have collected four wins in their last five home matches.

United need to be careful here with Sevilla so strong on home soil. The Mancunians breezed into the last 16 but on several occasions in the group stages, performances had plenty room for improvement. Defensively Mourinho’s men were solid but going forward they often lacked that cutting edge. This is something which still remains an issue as the Red Devils have managed just three goals in their last four Premier League matches. January signing Alexis Sanchez is eligible to play here but even the Chilean cannot single-handedly get United clicking in front of goal.

Relevant Stats, Injuries and Suspensions

While United are yet to take on Sevilla in a competitive setting, Jose Mourinho is no stranger to the Spanish outfit. He faced Sevilla eight times as Real Madrid boss, winning on seven occasions and losing just once. His current side coincidentally have a similar record when facing Spanish opposition away from home. The Red Devils have lost just once in their last eight visits to the Mediterranean country. They do face a fair few unavailable players for their upcoming trip though with Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Zlatan Ibrahimović all ruled out. There are also major doubts surrounding Eric Bailly and Daley Blind.

Sevilla have never gone further than this point in the Champions League, losing all three of their previous round of 16 ties. They can consider themselves unlucky that this is the case however, twice eliminated by just one goal and once on penalties. They certainly don’t lack the nerve having won the Europa League on three consecutive occasions between 2014 and 2016 but the Champions League is a different beast to tackle. Montella does at least have few injury concerns to worry about now that Simon Kjaer and Nolito returned to training. Luis Muriel has also declared that he will be fit in time although midfielder Ever Banega looks set to miss out.

Sevilla v Man Utd Tips

When you take into account Sevilla’s sensational home record and United’s not so brilliant form of late, it’s hard to back the visitors here. Sevilla are no strangers to a home draw though and their lack of a consistent goalscorer could mean they must settle for just that. United’s defence is the strongest in the English top-flight and Mourinho will surely be content to play it safely and grind out a draw. It’s a result that can be backed at 23/10 with BetVictor and with neither side boasting much form in attack, you may also want to bet on under 2.5 goals at 8/11 with Betfair.
