England will want to go through as group winners, which would give them a clash against a third placed side in the next round. It would give them a huge boost in their hopes for a run in this competition. Given the nature of the draw, winning this group could see England going far. Before they can get thinking about the knockout rounds, they need to deliver a hammer blow to a strong Slovakia side.
The bookies are backing them to go on and do that, with Betfair pricing England as 8/11 favourites for this game. They also have Slovakia at 5/1 to get a win which would send them through to the next round. The draw in this one is 13/5 with SkyBet, and that would open the group up for Wales to possibly go on and win it. That’s not something either of these two sides want.
England are right to be favourites, but their odds do seem a little too short. They’ve struggled during both their games so far, and something about them just doesn’t look right yet. They could grow in to the tournament, but they need to make a few changes. Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling aren’t clinical enough to start up front, so they need to make changes there.
With their forward line, the Three Lions shouldn’t be worried about scoring. Their main concern should be defending, as they’ve been far too open. This Slovakia side should be able to cut through England’s inexperienced defence, given their forward talent. Marek Hamsik showed his quality against Russia, and he can do the same here. We’re backing both teams to score in this one, which is priced at evens with Coral.
England have had to score extra of late just to win games, the Wales match is proof of that. They can’t afford to sit on a goal lead with their defence. Given the talent they have going forward, both on the pitch and the bench, we see them getting goals. Hodgson should name a much more bold side after the comeback in their last game. We think that makes over 1.5 goals for the Three Lions very well priced at evens with Coral.
