Spain v England Preview

While England are using the Nations League as an opportunity to build upon their impressive World Cup, Spain are using it as a chance to reboot. The drama that surrounded Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal as national team manager when Spain were already in Russia undoubtedly had a major impact on the players but it was the nature of their performances at the World Cup that most frustrated fans.

Spain have developed a well earned reputation for playing football with both style and substance. In Russia though, it looked as though they were simply keeping possession for possession’s sake and they really struggled to break opponents down. Similar criticisms were made of Barcelona when Luis Enrique took over as manager of the Catalan club. Spanish fans are hopeful that his more direct, attacking style of play will work as well with the national side as it did with Barcelona. The early signs are certainly very good with a narrow win over England and a tremendous 6-0 win over Croatia.

Like Enrique, Gareth Southgate is also working on a change in style. He wants England to play the sort of possession based football that the FA have been working on for some years now and will relish the challenge of facing Spain in Seville. This is a very big match for England and a great chance to see what they’re capable of.

Relevant Stats, Injuries and Suspensions

A controversial refereeing decision to rule out a late Danny Welbeck goal was all that stopped England from securing a draw against Spain when they met last month. Southgate has made several changes to his squad from that match at Wembley as England look to halt a run of four straight defeats in Spain.

Spain haven’t lost a home match since Georgia’s surprise 1-0 win in 2016. Enrique has suggested he will make changes to his team for Monday night’s game but whatever the line-up, Spain will take heart from their good recent form at home.

Spain v England Tips

England came very close to getting a point against Spain at Wembley but it’s tough to argue that the visitors did not deserve their win. Spain are looking very good in the early stages of Enrique’s management. Whether he makes significant changes to his team or plays a more predictable starting XI, Enrique will be confident about Spain’s chances. They certainly look good value to win at 4/5 with Ladbrokes.

England’s new, progressive style of play will take some time to be in but it should make them more threatening going forwards. Spain have the ability to score multiple goals in Sevilla but the away side can score too which makes a bet on over 2.5 goals look well priced at Evens with BetVictor.
