Ascot Gold Cup Betting Tips and Offers
Ascot Gold Cup Tips and Betting Offers, Ascot, Thursday 20th June 2019
The Gold Cup is synonymous with the Royal Ascot festival, while there’s a stacked list of contenders who are fighting it out for the crown this week. Ahead of this year’s race, you can see the latest betting odds and predictions right here.
Over 200-years from its first run, the Ascot Gold Cup remains the pinnacle race for stayers. The punishing long distance is serious test of endurance for the contenders, who have to cover two miles and three furlongs. That test has made it the opening leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown, but who can win it?
There are plenty of short priced contenders with Cross Counter at 7/2 with Ladbrokes and Dee Ex Bee priced at 5/1 with Betfred. However, we struggle to see past the favourite; Stradivarius. He comes into this race priced at 6/4 with bet365, but we still think there’s value in those odds.
Trainer John Gosden is expecting a strong run from his five-year-old here, who comes into this race unbeaten since the start of 2018. That run includes a victory at this race last year, while his form has kept up since. He started the year with a victory at the Yorkshire Cup Stakes last month, which marked a sixth straight victory.
He’s started as the favourite through all of those, while we expect him to live up to the tag in this one. We’re backing Stradivarius to retain the Ascot Gold Cup, so we’re backing him for success at 6/4 with bet365.
Gold Cup Betting Verdict
With plenty of contenders in the field, we can look a little further down the list for a bigger priced contender. The problem with many of the outsiders is that they lack any recent form across this distance, so it’s hard to see them having the staying power to finish among the top three. However, we can see a lot of value in Thomas Hobson, who has very recent successes across this distance.
Trainer Willie Mullins has seen him finish inside the top two in his last three outings. That includes a win at Doncaster in September which covered two miles and two furlongs. The other successes were over similar distances, so we have little doubt in Thomas Hobson’s ability to cover the ground. He sits out at 25/1 with bet365 heading into the Ascot Gold Cup, so we’re backing him to contend here. With bet365 paying out on three places in this one, Thomas Hobson looks like a great outside bet.
