The top two in the Premier League go head to head on Sunday at White Hart Lane. Tottenham haven’t made much of a splash this season, but they’ve made a strong start. They’re still unbeaten, and they will really test this Manchester City side. However, will they be able to hurt City’s defence with Harry Kane absent?

Even though they’re at home, Sky Bet are pricing Tottenham at 12/5 to take all three points. They make the draw 13/5. While Spurs are unbeaten at the minute, they aren’t being backed to stay that way. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side did pretty well in this fixture last season.

A 4-1 win over City last season was a turning point for Spurs, who went on to finish above their next opponents. If they were to finish above them this season, you’d expect that would see them win the league. Tottenham are currently second behind Guardiola’s team, and if they can get a result here they’d have to be seen as title challengers. They may have slipped to third last term, but they were the only side who even threatened to keep pace with Leicester.

There were signs last weekend that City are slightly vulnerable. Sides often drop deep and defend against them, like they’re up against the Arsenal side of old. However, Swansea had joy last weekend with a high pressing game. There’s arguably no side in the top flight who press the ball as well as Pochettino’s Tottenham side.

Betting Verdict

We expect Pochettino to push up and deny City as much space as possible. The size of Wembley’s pitch was blamed for Tottenham’s recent Champions League defeat, because it’s so much bigger than White Hart Lane. That smaller pitch already denies City room, Spurs’ pressing could well cause them problems. Pochettino’s men have conceded just three goals all season, only one of which has come from open play.
